General Description: Boiling River Hot Springs is hydrothermal natural phenomenon created where a large hot spring enters the Gardner River, allowing the hot and cool waters to mix into a temperature comfortable enough to bathe. Boiling River is found in Yellowstone Park in Montana/Wyoming.
Location: Inside Yellowstone Park, Montana, just south of the 45th Parallel Bridge, located in the Mammoth area of the park It's right near the North Entrance to Yellowstone accessed from Gardiner, Montana.
Directions: From Gardiner, Montana head south on US-89 S/S 2nd St toward W Stone St Continue to follow US-89 S 0.2 mi Turn left onto S 3rd St 295 ft Slight left onto US-89 S Partial toll road Entering Wyoming 3.5 mi
Accessibility: Boiling River Hot Springs is accessible through Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone's Boiling River is located approximately 2 miles north of Mammoth and 2.9 miles south of the park's North Entrance. There is parking and it is a moderate walk to the Hot Springs. The hike is 1.25-mile round trip.
Hot Springs: Boiling River Hot Springs is a hydrothermal phenomenon created where a large hot spring enters the Gardner River, allowing the hot and cool waters to mix into a temperature comfortable enough to bathe in. The temperature source is about 140 degrees. You can not enter near the source area but go down river. Temperatures vary downriver according to the river flow and how river rocks are assembled. You can search for your perfect soak by finding the perfect mixing point between the two waters, one side of your body can feel like it’s burning while the other side can feel like it’s freezing. The temperature differences can be drastic. Finding the perfect place to soak is the fun part.
Hot Spring Tips: Boiling River Hot Springs is day use only. The Boiling River is closed once dark hits. Clothing is not optional. Don’t forget your swimsuit. Visit in the winter, fall or late summer. The Boiling River is closed during the spring when the river rises and becomes dangerous and often doesn’t open until mid-summer. No Food or glass. No pets are permitted. Boiling River have been known to support the organisms that can cause Primary amoebic meningoenchephalitis and Legionnaire’s disease. Avoid submerging your head in the hot spring water to be safe.
